Canada's Prairie Provinces are both about the same size and share a pretty similar overall geography (Alberta's western end aside). But despite these similarities, Alberta has a population that's about four times the size of Saskatchewan. So what's going on in Alberta that's attracted so many more people than Saskatchewan?

I get so frustrated driving in sask pot hole filled roads and driving endlessly with barely any sign of civilisation then take a breath of fresh air after crossing the border with Alberta's. it's beautiful, wider and better maintained roads and more towns, cities, and businesses in general especially for the road trip pit stops, there's always a Tim's near by. cheaper gas in Alberta but I do believe insurances are more expensive.

Okay, so... clicked the video cause your thumbnail used the word 'same' a lot. But your video, you use the more apt term, similar. (For those who wonder why this matters... it's because the provinces really aren't the 'same' exactly. Similar is more accurate since they are close but not quite carbon copies.) Update: 7:41 's question about population. I'll listen first and write what I want to add here below. You're doing well enough I figure so far into the video in touching on the nuances, but there are a couple things I think you are going to miss, due to them being kind of in that subconscious level of how people are about X place vs Y place. Continued below after next pause. Okay, so you got to the natural borders part. So here's what you kind of missed, though not entirely. More like, secondary factors that exist because of the primary you spoke of. But there is some stuff that happened a long time ago that also matters still even today. 1. Saskatchewan is often seen by those outside of it as being 'stuck in the past'. The exact date used by each person will vary, but the general idea is that Sask is always like... a few decades behind the rest so to speak. Now, I don't personally believe that, because I lived there and have experienced both the true and false natures of that idea. But that is something I come across when talking to people from other provinces. To them, the province seems like a time capsule of what used to be. And to be fair, since a lot of our history books cover mostly two to three areas of Canada, the prairies being one of them... it makes some level of sense. In that regards, well... 2. Saskatchewan has had a tumultuous history in regards to things like migration of populations. Both in, and out. To keep this short and sweet, let's boil it down to this. Saskatchewan has had many economic swings, in some form or another. In the earlier 1900's back with the dust bowl and the wars, and the economic depression and recessions, Saskatchewan bit that sandwich hard. And then it recovered for a time, slowly, with some nice boosts from resource extraction booms, etc. And then the later 1900's occurred. Where as before the reasons were mostly ecological and economics based due to world events, this time it was more due to events at home and politics that played the part. Economics too, but it has a tendency to have its finger in every pie. Kind of like politics has its thumb in every eye. Anyways, in both situations the end result was a mass exodus out of the prairies and rural areas, into the cities and slightly more urban areas. This resulted in that somewhat of a stagnation that is often referred to Sask being stuck in the past. But, it's also more than that. Why? Because the people who stuck around in Sask through all of that, some of which literally are only passing on this past few years... remember all of it. And they don't let some of it go lightly. People sometimes forget that we still have people alive today who were born during and just after the tail end of the end results of WWII. They went through ALL of the turmoil we commonly forget about today. In Sask, this has its effect in shaping the politics and economics that tend to stick around with the rural areas. Rural areas that feed the urban areas with new students, new workers, etc and so forth; when they aren't being supplied by people from outside the province or country instead. And so you get this mishmash of people who have grown up accustomed to 'the old ways' so to speak, for better or worse; and the rest of the people who have a myriad of beliefs and ideas on how best to do X vs Y coming from all over the place both near and far. And the reason why many rural areas tend to hold to their older belief sets and cultures... well... when you have had to repeatedly go through harsh times and fall back on what are or have been mostly tried and true methods of survival and even thrive from some of them; do you immediately change to something else because some rando says its a better way? No, you probably don't. And don't lie. Humans tend to abhor change, but not always. Continued in reply. Got too long.

      3. These two things result in a few outcomes. One of the first most important outcomes, is the lack of will to invest in the province, because there is no certainty that there will be success in the province. That may seem silly, since there is no certainty of success for any investment or business anywhere in the world... there is always factors that can get involved and in the way. But that is the mindset of many who don't want to accidentally just throw away their money. And throw away your money you very well might do, if you bring it to Saskatchewan. Between the costs of doing business, the lack of profitability due to the lack of population to support the margins required to justify doing business; it's just not a good idea to go into business in Saskatchewan unless you can withstand multiple years of losses prior to finally getting ahead of the game. There are of course exceptions to this, because some industries are so profitable by existing at all, that you can probably beat that whole regime. But you better have big pockets. Very full, very big, pockets. And so this problem spirals into itself, because the only way you really get people to move to an area they might not like, is if there are good jobs with decent costs of living, etc and so forth. Proof, see Alberta's population booms time and time again. Plenty of people in Canada despise Alberta for their own ideological reasons, yet still move there to work, because of that prior point being true. And so you end up with large swaths of areas of Saskatchewan that kind of just... keep being the way they used to be. Like a time capsule. With only small changes, here and there. For better or worse. Secondly of those outcomes, you get the political side of things. Canada as a whole tends to veer center left, with some radicals pushing further, and some extremists pulling back and forth, with the center right and the center itself making up the rest. How a person quantifies these groups in their own head will vary, but the general truth is that Canada is center left, with a sizeable center right, and many inbetween; and very vocal minority radicals and extremists on both sides. In Saskatchewan, this has resulted in basically this due to the political events over the decades: You'll basically never get a Liberal win over the province, but perhaps a seat or two might be grabbed. You might get another NDP win, but that's not likely either for similar reasons for the Liberals. Both have a history of corruption in Saskatchewan, with the NDP having done rather well for a while before falling to the same disease. But... with a catch. NDP did well, as far as a government can do with the very bad hand they were given to deal with... but they ended up rotting from within; much like the potato blight that became their legacy. Both of these parties styles of government did a lot of harm to the rural areas, though the more urban won't see it that way, because they benefited from a lot of the same actions taken. Be that as it may, it led to the creation of the Sask Party after the province decided to give the provincial conservatives a try instead. Note, I am talking both federal and provincial here back and forth, because in Sask... it really kind of is the same for all 3. ESpecially for the NDP since they are a 'big tent' party. Well, the Grant Devine government back then, tried to undo some of the rural harms... for better or worse. Let's sum that up to it basically ended up worse in a lot of ways, even if the parts that were made better should have been kept around... but weren't. So, Saskatchewan was left in this pickle for a while, where they had to choose between two groups they didn't want for the most part anymore, and another who just soiled the bed as well. Enter the Sask Party. A mishmash of MP's from the previous governments of all sorts, Liberal included despite the disdain, who wanted to 'do better than the others' to keep it simple. Well, they ended up winning... and the party lost some of its original MP's. (or rather MLA's, but let's not get into details too far here, this already long enough.) So now the Sask Party is basically just a reoccurrence of the old Grant Devine government, but under a new banner. And, well... To many across Canada, anything too far right of whatever is their idea of center or center left, is too far right for their tastes. (Even if it's not far right at all.) So now Saskatchewan is seen as being behind the times, backwards, etc. But it wasn't always like that. Back in the 2000's, there was an attempt by the media to portray Saskatchewan as being actually ahead of everyone else in a way. This being due to the same history with the NDP and the Social Credit party prior to it. Yeah, that did not go over well with the folk who caught wind of that. But it is true, none the less. A lot of the center left/center leaning policies we consider to be part of who Canada is on the world stage, originate from Saskatchewan being willing to try them first; for better or worse. The healthcare we have today, well, it suffers some problems right now, but when it was still considered to be world leading for its time, it was like a miracle to many who were having to suffer extreme wait times for things like surgeries that were medically and life-alteringly necessary. If you have a co-op near you, or some other form of cooperative, that has a lot of roots in Sask as well. Saskatchewan for a time, was the socialists heaven in Canada, albeit with a lot of flat land and heavy winds. But, that was all also during a time when it was Capitalism vs Communism potential WWIII style. So these sorts of ideas also pushed a lot of people away over time. Especially those who felt or were actually restricted/harmed by those policies, in some form or another. Many farming families in Canada were lost during those decades over time. Many of those farms are now corporate owned in some way. People who have a lot of money have been buying up those cheap properties over time, because those farmers sold for whatever they could get, just to get out. The only time you hear about farmers getting a good fair deal for their land now today, is when they happen to be near a hugely important project that doesn't have the time to waste on trying to reduce the payout. And some of those people hold onto their land for as long as possible to get that pay out. This results in a situation where the government in charge for instance, is often caught up in a quagmire of controversy over who got what money for whatever purchase was made to enable whatever project. Right or wrong as it may be in each case. There are people who will buy land they think will end up selling for more just because it's near an urban center. So it will go untouched, unused, unfarmed, for decades, and then suddenly become one of the most expensive purchases made by the recent government. Land that could have been used to create more homes, or more businesses. Instead it sits there, possibly forever, untouched, until someday it isn't. For better or worse, again. And so the time capsule continues.

Economic factors is the biggest reason why there is a great difference between provinces in population. but there are other reasons that need to be taken into account. Political Ideology is another reason. Although Saskatchewan in recent years is considered to be a Conservative/Right-Wing province now. In the past, it was considered to be an extremely Socialist/Left-Wing in it's foundation. To some degree, it's still has some Socialist implementation to this day. The O&G matters of Alberta is kind of a myth. Alberta is still a O&G Mecca, it's fully relies on Tar Sands oil projects. Saskatchewan has more accessible O&G industry, many companies do not want to establish roots in Saskatchewan for Prejudicial reasons.

They are very different from one another. Saskatchewan has flat topography which is not very interesting to look at and it provides no windbreak, so the cold winds of winter can be very intense. Alberta has more rolling hills and the majestic Rocky Mountains. Although Alberta also gets very cold, they have a weather phenomena called Chinook winds which bring warm winds and a break from the cold. Culturally they differ as Alberta is full of many transplants from around the world as well as other provinces. Saskatchewan is a less popular destination and there are less interesting things to do. There is economic opportunity and the oil and gas industry also in Saskatchewan, but much less than in Alberta. Saskatchewan has a more small town/city feel while major cities in Alberta are more metropolitan and diverse. Alberta is one of the richest provinces and many flock there from BC and the Eastern provinces for work and the lower cost of living than BC. As many have noted, you didn't mention Manitoba, which is also a prairie province and it is probably more interesting than Saskatchewan. I think many Canadians would view Saskatchewan to be pretty much the most boring province in Canada.

@@Rancid-Jane Sure, there are definitely flat areas in Alberta. But there is almost no comparison overall. Alberta has the Rocky Mountains and SK has hardly any places to ski/snowboard. The Southern locations in SK where most people live and which can be viewed via the Trans Canada highway are essentially all flat prairie lands with a few valleys.

Saskatchewan is the place for people, who do not like people, to live.

I am disappointed there is NO MENTION of Palliser's Triangle. This semi-arid area of both the southern parts of Saskatchewan and Alberta makes for a challenge that most of us from the U.S. don't understand. I am aware of this because I had a great aunt and her husband settle in the middle of it, Golden Prairie, SK. This is 2 hours north of the Montana border and my contact there says they have been in a multi-year drought, not uncommon for that area. Initially it was felt this are should NOT be farmed because it was so dry.
